  • Discs exist between the vertebrae in your back. They act as a cushion between the bones as you move through life -- sitting, standing, bending and simply moving. Good posture and a healthy lifestyle will help prevent getting a ruptured disc.

    Ruptured or Herniated

A ruptured disc, also known as a herniated disc, can cause many problems. Some people and doctors will also refer to this condition as a slipped disc.

    What is a disc?

There are two parts to a disc -- an inner part (the nucleus) which is soft and springy and an external shell (the annulus) that protects the nucleus.

    What ruptures?

When the annulus ruptures and can no longer protect the nucleus, a person is said to have a ruptured disc.

    Symptoms

Back pain, numbness in any place of the body, shoulder pain, leg pain, leg tingling and lower back pain are common symptoms. Some people may not feel any of these at all.

    Treatment

Most ruptured discs will heal in their own time with modified activity and rest. Sometimes surgery is necessary states Cedars-Sinai health resources.
