In 2008, Nalgene announced it was phasing out the production of any bottles containing BPA, bisphenol A, a chemical shown to cause cancer and increase the risk of various other health problems. As the hard plastic bottles aged, cracked and broke down, BPA leaked into the drinking water contained in them.

On the Other: Newer Nalgene Bottles are BPA-Free

The new lines of Nalgene bottles are made from a variety of plastics and steels, but all of them are BPA-free. The Nalgene Everyday bottle is made from a BPA-less copolyester, and the Nalgene Ultralite is made from high-density polyethylene.

    Bottom Line

Nalgene has produced bottles in the past which contained cancer-causing BPA. Therefore, older Nalgene bottles might be unsafe to drink from. However, since 2008, Nalgene has revamped its materials, and all bottles are free of BPA.
