The precise definition of school safety varies by local area and school district. In the broadest terms, it means providing an environment free of violence, crime and harassment both for students and for teachers and other employees.
Weapons
School safety means prohibiting weapons on campus. This applies to overt weapons, such as guns and knives, but also more innocuous objects such as Swiss army knives which may be used as weapons.
Alcohol and Drugs
Illicit substances, such as alcohol and drugs, often foster violence and fall under the definition of an unsafe school environment. This applies both to substances brought in by students and those brought in by teachers.
Bullying
School safety means preventing or minimizing incidents of bullying, which often cause severe emotional trauma and spill over into violence.
Buildings and Equipment
School safety also applies to more passive dangers. School buildings should be up to code, fire alarms should be in good working order, the campus should be free of threats such as asbestos and lead paint, and playground equipment should be properly maintained.
After School
School safety also means ensuring that after-school programs provide a safe atmosphere, that students can arrive and depart school safely, and that elements such as crossing guards and door locks are in place once school has ended for the day.
