A car's fuel injection system is critical to the vehicle's operation, with a malfunctioning fuel pump causing ignition problems and compromising overall performance. A fuel pump pulsator plays a key role in the process.
Identification
Most fuel pump pulsators are simply a piece of flexible, high-pressurized rubber tubing.
Facts
The fuel pump pulsator connects the fuel pump to the gas tank's metal fuel line.
Function
The fuel pump pulsator dampens fuel pump noise. The pulsator also restricts some of the fuel pump's output, maintaining proper flow rate.
Considerations
Age and wear can cause fuel pump pulsators to fail, leading to stalling and poor engine performance. Fuel pump pulsators are particularly sensitive to ethanol and dry gas additives.
Solution
If a fuel pump pulsator fails, replacing it with regular rubber hosing can often fix the problem. To prevent splitting, some manufacturers now make fuel pump pulsators from Viton, a stronger form of synthetic material that's resistant to fuel additives.
