  • For most construction projects, several tools are commonly used no matter what project is being completed. These tools are the circular saw, the pneumatic nail gun and the air compressor. The tools used in construction differ greatly depending on the project being completed but an understanding of the manner in which a circular saw, pneumatic nail gun and air compressor are used lays the foundation for an individual to gain an understanding of other construction tools.

    The Circular Saw

In construction work, the circular saw is the single most operated tool. When using a circular saw for the first time, it is imperative that you use the wrench tool that comes with the circular saw to ensure the blade is properly tightened. Take the circular saw and plug it into an electrical outlet. Be careful not to depress the trigger until ready to use the saw. Place the saw on the wood to be cut by lining the blade up with the mark made on the wood to indicate the proper place to cut. Depress the rigger on the saw and push the saw forward to begin cutting into the wood. Use the indicator at the front of the saw to ensure that the blade remains on the cut line. At the end of the cut, remove your finger from the trigger and hold the saw until the blade stops spinning before setting the saw down. Not doing so may cause the saw to kick back and may cause serious bodily injury.

    The Air Compressor

Next to the circular saw, the air compressor is possibly the most important tool for any large-scale project. Allowing the operation of a wide variety of pneumatic tools, air compressors contribute the ability to quickly and efficiently complete large-scale construction projects. The first step in using an air compressor is plugging the air compressor into an electrical outlet. Once the tool is connected to the electrical outlet, locate the switch that activates the compressor to start the compressor and begin building up the air pressure in the compressor air tank. Stretch out the hoses that move the air from the tank to the pneumatic tools--most commonly the pneumatic nail gun--before attaching the air hoses to the air compressor. This prevents the pressurized hoses from curling into a knot. Once the hoses are pressurized it is possible to connect the pneumatic nail gun. Once the project is complete, or at the end of each day, turn the air compressor off and release the air pressure by using the release valve located at the bottom of the compressor tank. While releasing the pressure, it is necessary to tilt the tool so that moisture that builds within the tank is drained from within the holding tank as the air pressure is released.

    The Pneumatic Nail Gun

The pneumatic nail gun is quite possibly one of the most important tools in modern construction. Employing high-pressure blasts of air to drive nails, pneumatic nail guns--in the hands of experienced construction professional--have increased the efficiency of modern construction projects. Allowing carpenters to drive fasteners into wood at the pull of a trigger, the pneumatic nail gun increases the speed at which a project may be completed. Like many tools that operate as a result of a series of moving parts striking other objects, the pneumatic nail gun also requires regular maintenance to keep the tool operating at full efficiency. Each day, before connecting the tool to the air hoses, apply three drops of pneumatic tool oil into the end of the pneumatic nail gun where the hose connects. This allows for lubrication of the moving parts within the pneumatic nailer and greatly increases the life of the tool. Load the holder on the gun with nails designed for the model of pneumatic nail gun being used and connect the air hose to the gun. Be careful to keep your fingers away from the trigger when the gun is not in use to avoid an accidental firing of the nail gun. Although equipped with a safety that depresses when the gun is placed into contact with the wood that is being nailed, the gun may accidental discharge if the safety mechanism comes into contact with another object while the trigger is depressed. Failure to adhere to this recommendation can cause serious harm.

    Conclusion

The wide variety of tools available for use in the construction industry each require differing knowledge to successfully operate the tool during a construction project. However, the circular saw, the air compressor and the pneumatic nail gun are the most common items found on any construction job. Understanding the basic operation of these tools is the foundation for gaining a greater understanding of the wide variety of tools utilized in the construction industry.
