According to the World Wide Fund for Nature, approximately 1.5 million tons of plastic is used to bottle 89 billion liters of water a year. According to Seattle Pi reporter Tom Paulson, "The Earth Policy Institute estimated that to make the plastic for the bottles burns up something like 1.5 million barrels of oil, enough to power 100,000 cars for a year."

On the Other: There Are Worse Things for The Environment

According to Low Tech Magazine, other bottled beverages not only use more energy in their production they also use more water than bottled water. Such bottled beverages are also transported over longer distances.

    Bottom Line

Bottled water is bad for the environment, and though there are worse things for the environment than bottled water, water is easily accessible from the faucet. It is easier to cut back on bottled water, since it is provided at home.
