What is a ballet barre?

    The "Great answer" is not so "great"!

    The error lies first in the height of the barre. It is NOT hip height. That is much too low and second in it's use as support.

    Standard ballet barre is 42" high but for optimum use privately the height of the breast bone is recommended which is much higher then the hip. You would have no way of improving your extension at a barre that incredibly low.

    Also, the barre is used to help balance and should never be used for support (except in stretching the leg.) It should never be gripped but just gently fingertips on the top for balance.

    Ballet barres are used for balance while performing exercises to improve the dancer's overall technique. It is typically wooden or metal, and can be attached to the wall or free standing. It is also often used to assist dancers in stretching. A dancer may place her leg up on the bar and perform various stretches.

    A ballet barre (if you're going to dance ballet in any way, you need to know this) is a bar on the wall usually made out of wood or metal, placed about at shoulder-level that you use for balance when you are doing certain ballet exercises, such as the apply-name "barrework."

    The barre shouldn't be used for total support, like a crutch. Maybe a bit at first, but over time, you should need the barre less and less. The real challenge is doing the same exercises without the barre at all--which is called centerwork, which usually takes place right after the barrework.

    Ballet is always a challenge, folks.
