  • Surgery and technology go hand in hand in order to restore an individual's health. A stagnation in the evolution of surgical technology principles and practice thus also results in a stagnation of health improvements. Change in this area can be stimulated with a step by step approach.

    Knowledge

Surgical technology principles and practice cannot move forward if the knowledge base behind the practice and technology stays the same. Research in order to better understand how the human body works. This will let you identify specific surgical and technological gaps that need to be met. Once those needs are identified, you can research and develop the necessary technology.

    Developers

Once you know what surgical technology you need, get funds together through government agencies, medical organizations, and personal donors. Use these funds to work with developers who can create technological prototypes. Developers are more apt to take on projects for which you have plenty of documentation. Show why and what you need and expect on paper.

    Trials

Put your new technology and procedures through vigorous testing. You will need to work with the Food and Drug Administration, medical administration boards, and medical personnel in order to conduct the trials. Document everything as you go. Write up your results when you are done.

    Communication

Doctors and nurses will keep using the old methods of surgery and old technologies until they become aware that there is something better available. Thus, once you have completed your clinical trial, if you had a favorable outcome, publish your finding and/or developments in relevant medical journals, papers and websites. Lecture frequently at conferences or medical institutions. Compare the old method to yours statistically in your publications or lectures. This will give your results a context for meaning and will show what a difference the new practice makes for patients, since a new technological tool or procedure may be expensive in the first years in which it is implemented.

    Follow Up

Even though clinical trials may provide favorable outcomes initially, follow up with patients and medical personnel who have used your new procedures and technology. This will give you an idea of the long term effects of the developments and give you a starting point for any improvements that need to be made. Publish your findings and improvements so that the medical community does not continue to use what is no longer efficient or as safe.
