The producer is the cornerstone of any musical recording. Every producer approaches his role differently, although typically serves as a sounding board to the artist or band and a de facto supervisor of recording sessions.
Function
The producer is the musical director of a recording session. He or she makes decisions on such factors as which musicians and engineers to use, which studio to record in, and what musical direction the sessions will strive for.
Pre-production
During preproduction, the producer begins to form production ideas for the artist or band prior to entering the studio. Songs, arrangements and instruments are typically chosen by the producer with input from the artists during pre-production.
Production
Actual recording comprises the production portion of a producer's role. The producer oversees all aspects of the recording process, from basic tracking to final overdubs.
Mix
Once tracking is complete, the producer will either mix the sessions or send the sessions to a mixing engineer. The producer generally has final say over a song mix with input from the artists.
Mastering
Once mixing is complete, the producer then sends the mixes on to a mastering engineer. Mastering sets the overall volume and equalization levels of the entire album. The producer typically signs off on a mastered album before it goes into production.
