Direct mail is a form of advertising used to help businesses sell more product or increase consumer awareness. Direct mail is one of the oldest ways companies use to sell merchandise, and when executed correctly, can provide a huge boost to sales.
Target
Direct mail will work wonders if you know your target audience. For example, if you sell vitamins through direct mail, targeting your mailing campaign to include only men ages 35 to 54, may lead to better results than targeting men between ages 25 to 34.
Cutomization
You can customize your message to fit your target demographic. This is of utmost importance because a 25-year-old and a 50-year-old will probably have different reasons for purchasing items through the mail.
Control
Direct mail gives you control over the entire selling process. You don't have distributors and other middlemen involved in the selling process. With direct mail, its just you and the decision maker.
Flexibility
You can pretty much mail anything, and there are a wide variety of items that can be sold through the mail. You could use very artistic mailings that may help increase your response rates.
Tracking
Direct mailing is the rare form of advertising that allows you to track your response rates. Test different messages to evaluate effectiveness. This allows you to stop using what doesn't work and use more of what does.
