  • Memory cards are portable storage devices commonly used for digital cameras or computer file storage. On-screen errors are often generic and do not give full descriptions of what the problem could be. Attempting to troubleshoot is the best way to find out what a memory card error could mean, or where it is coming from.

    Full Memory

A memory card error most commonly means the card is full and files should be deleted to make more room. Plug a USB cord in or use your computer's memory card reader to open a storage folder and remove old pictures/files/data.

    Damage

An error could be caused by physical damage to the card. Examine the card for any obvious signs of scratches, chips or breakage on the plastic casing. A damaged card will not be read by a computer's memory card reader. A severely damaged memory card that consistently shows errors and is not accessible should be discarded. Continued attempts to read the memory card could cause formatting issues on the computer drive.

    Dust

Use a can of compressed air to blow away dust particles from the memory card. A lint-free computer cloth works well to clean a memory card as well, but do not use paper towels, as they can cause scratches.

    Incompatibility

A generic screen error could mean that your memory card is not compatible with the computer's memory card reader. Place the card in a device such as a digital camera and use a USB cable to plug the camera into the computer.

    Formatting

A memory card could have formatting problems where portions of data have been damaged and a card cannot be read. Right-click on the memory card reader drive and choose "Format," then follow on-screen directions. This will delete any existing data.
