Hypertension in infants is caused by a variety of medical conditions. It is estimated that nearly 5 percent of kids have hypertension. Babies who are born prematurely might have hypertension because they are likely to have problems with the maturity of their hearts and lungs. Babies can be born with congential problems in the kidneys and heart that will cause hypertension. Some drugs can cause hypertension in infants. If the mother uses cocaine or another hallucinogenic drug while pregnant this can cause hypertension. Also, the use of selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitors or SSRIs by the mother can cause problems for the baby after birth. Babies who are born with meconium in their mouths or lungs can also be susceptible to hypertension. Sometimes there is no cause for infant hypertension. In some cases, it is possible that cells in the artery wall lining might be sensitive to certain factors.Preterm Birth
