The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) is Canada's government agency responsible for processing background checks. A Canadian background check reveals several types of information about an individual.
Criminal Record
During a Canadian background check, individual's criminal record is requested through a Certified Criminal Record Check and provides information about any criminal charges. Details about dispositions, convictions and discharges are documented.
Fingerprints
Another key piece of information found in the criminal record during a background check is fingerprints. A full set with both rolled and flat impressions of each finger are used to reveal an individual's identity if implicated in a crime or to verify a clean record.
Employment Eligibility
The Canadian government requires a background check to determine an individual's eligibility for employment. According to the Canadian Criminal Real Time Identification Services, employment inquiries are included in the approximately 230,000 fingerprint requests received annually.
Firearms Purchasing
The Canadian Firearms Program conducts a public-safety check on all Canadians seeking a license to possess firearms. The check determines if she is eligible to do so.
Criminal Involvement
As part of the public-safety check, the Canadian Firearms Information System automatically inquires with the Canadian Police Information Centre to conclude if an applicant has been linked to any criminal incident reports.
