Special significance is embedded within the green, white and red colors of the national flag of Mexico. The meaning of each color has changed since the flag was officially adopted in 1821.
Origin of original
The flag's original meanings were determined by Mexico's first emperor, Agustin de Iturbide.
Official changes
In 1867 a new flag design emerged and new president Benito Juarez Garcia designated that the original meanings of the colors be changed.
Green
Green originally represented Mexico's successful independence from Spain in 1821. After Juarez Garcia's official change, it now signifies hope.
White
Prior to the authorized variation, white signified devotion to Catholicism as the supreme religion in Mexico. It now stands for the union of the Mexican nation.
Red
Red represented an union with Europe under de Iturbide. The amendment declared red symbolizes the blood shed of Mexico's national heroes.
Significance
The historical importance behind the meaning of the colors is celebrated in Mexico each year on Flag Day or "El Dia De La Bandera." This national holiday takes place on February 24.
