  • Computer memory is a form of data-storage information that is stored on chips rather than disks. The term computer memory also refers to the physical chips that hold the data.

    Types

The different types of memory include random-access memory (RAM), read-only memory (ROM), programmable read-only memory (PROM), erasable programmable read-only memory (EPROM) and electrically erasable programmable read-only memory (EEPROM).

    RAM

RAM is the most familiar form of memory; it is the type of memory that is held on the memory chips sold in stores. You can both read and write to RAM but it is completely erased when the computer is turned off.

    ROM

ROM is the memory that holds the information used to start the computer. It can be read from, but you cannot write to it.

    PROM

You can store a small program on a PROM chip; however, once the program is on the chip, it cannot be erased.

    EPROM

EPROM is similar to PROM in that it is used to store a program. The difference is that it can be erased if the chip is exposed to ultraviolet light.

    EEPROM

EEPROM can also store data for long periods of time; however, it can be erased with an electrical charge. This is the type of memory that is in USB drives and MP3 players.
