Minimum wage in Connecticut is currently $8 per hour; however, the state minimum wage will be raised to $8.25 per hour effective January 1, 2010, a full dollar higher than the federal minimum wage.
History
At the beginning of the new millennium, Connecticut workers made at least $6.15 per hour. Since then, Connecticut's minimum wage has seen an increase in eight out of the past 10 years.
Federal Minimum Wage
The federal minimum wage is currently $7.25 per hour, a dollar less than Connecticut's current minimum wage. Therefore, federal minimum wage law does not apply; employers must abide by the higher wage rate.
Minors
According to state law, minors under the age of 18 who work in certain state, political or agricultural industries may be paid 85 percent of the applicable minimum wage.
Overtime
Overtime pay in Connecticut must be paid at one and one-half times the employee's regular rate of pay after 40 hours per week, according to state restrictions.
Waiters/Bartenders
Minimum wage is different for Connecticut employees who rely on tips. As of 2010, bartenders must receive at least $7.34 per hour, and other service employees must make at least $5.69 per hour in addition to their tip income.
