  • If you want to get a good job, you'll probably need to learn English. English is rapidly becoming mandatory for job prospects and advancement in many non-English speaking countries. English is a complex language and it takes a great deal of time and effort to master it. However, the more you use English, the more fluent you become in it. If you want to learn English, you are going to have to be active in your learning, not only studying it but using the language as often, and in as many situations, as you can.

    The Basics

Most language learning begins with the easiest and most basic elements. In English, it is common to begin learning by learning the alphabet. The alphabet is the foundation of English, both in pronunciation and in writing. You will need to learn the names of the letters, the different ways of pronouncing the letters and how to write them. Unlike some other languages, there is not a standard stroke order for English letters that much be followed, but you do need to learn to make them legibly. Numbers are also a common beginning point in learning English.

    Listen

English pronunciation can be very difficult to master because there are a number of different, equally valid pronunciations of the same word. British, Australian and American English speakers pronounce many of the same words in markedly different ways without any of them being incorrect. The more you listen to English, the more familiar you become with dialects and regional differences. You also become more familiar with overall pronunciation, which will help you to speak quicker and more confidently in conversations. There are a great many resources for English listening practice. You can watch movies and TV shows in English, listen to English songs and download English podcasts.

    Read

Some students of English focus on the spoken components of the language so much that they almost never practice reading. Reading is an essential part of learning to master English. Reading not only helps you learn new vocabulary, but also helps with remembering sentence structure, grammar and commonly used words. Reading in English will also help you to write better and more fluently in English. People often use higher-level and more complex vocabulary and sentences in written English than they do when speaking. You can begin by reading simple English stories either online or by buying or borrowing kids' books or stories in simplified English. Then work your way up to more complex writing as your vocabulary and grammar improve.

    Write

Writing in English is essential for remembering grammar and vocabulary, and for learning to express yourself in more complex sentences. Keep an English notebook and write in English in it every day. Even a beginner can use simple vocabulary to write down short passages. Using the language will help you to remember and apply it. Writing also has the advantage of being low-pressure. You are not having a live conversation with another person, so you can take your time, look up words in the dictionary and make mistakes without embarrassment.

    Speak

Eventually, you are going to have to speak to other people in English. Speaking tends to make English learners the most nervous. Speaking is not only necessary but helpful. Speaking with others will help you to think more quickly, respond to a variety of prompts and become more familiar with colloquialisms, metaphors and slang. Speaking with others will help build your confidence, and if you have a helpful partner, she can also help explain nuances in the language that you might not know, or that are unclear.
