A patent is an approval of property rights given to an inventor for a new product. This is issued by the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
General Information
Usually, the initial patent term lasts 20 years from the filing date. U.S. patents are effective only within the United States, and under certain conditions patent extensions and adjustment are allowed.
Types
Several different forms of patents are plant patents, design patents and utility patents.
Plant Patents
Plant patents are granted to anyone who invents or discovers and produces a new variety of plant. This process must occur asexually (not involving the union of male and female cells).
Design Patents
Design patents are granted to anyone who invents an original design for a manufacturer.
Utility Patent
Utility patents are granted to anyone who invents a new product, machine or any other useful processes or inventions.
