The Internet provides many ways to communicate with individuals and groups, including email, video conferencing and voice conferencing. Chat rooms are one popular method of communication.
Chat Room Basics
A chat room is an Internet space where a group of people communicate with text. You enter your text, and it appears on the screen for everyone in the room to see.
Accessing Chat Rooms
Chat rooms are largely limited to online services such as AOL (America Online). When you log in to AOL, you will see clickable links to chat rooms that are sorted in a variety of ways.
Chat Room Sorting
Chat rooms can be sorted by topic (sports, movies, music), by age group and sometimes by current events, such as presidential elections.
Moderation
AOL chat rooms in particular are monitored for language, behavior and appropriateness of comments. Many chat rooms prohibit discussions of piracy, religion or drug use.
Security
Be aware that people in chat rooms aren't always who they claim to be, and some people might try to trick you into giving them sensitive personal information.
