  • There are various factors that can cause foot pain. One of these is the type of shoes you wear. If your shoes do not fit properly, they may cause significant foot pain and discomfort. Additionally, if shoes fail to provide a good arch support, they may irritate joints and skin on your feet. More serious foot problems include heel spurs, corns, bunions, Morton's neuroma, hammertoes or sprains and fractures. Possible treatments for foot pain include wearing well-fitted footwear or shoe inserts. However, sometimes foot pain can be relieved only through steroid injections or even surgery.

    Types of Foot Pain

Foot pain has many possible causes. While uncomfortable shoes may cause temporary foot pain, there are some more serious foot problems. A corn is a callus growth that is yellowish in color and usually develops on the top of the toes. They typically occur when toes rub against each other or when they rub against the inside of a shoe. They are extremely uncomfortable and can cause great pain; however, changing the types of shoes you wear and applying corn pads to the inflamed area can alleviate the pain quickly. Bunions are another cause of foot pain. They are protrusions of bone or tissue around a joint in your foot. They are very uncomfortable because they rub against your shoe and may get worse over time if they are not treated. Bunions occur more in women because of the type of shoes they wear--more constricted, pointed and tight. The treatment for bunions is similar to that of corns; changing shoes and applying pads are helpful and simple remedies, but surgery is an option if the bunions are extremely painful. Morton's neuroma involves the rubbing and squeezing of a nerve between two bones in your foot. It usually is caused by long periods of standing or walking, and the inflamed area often is swollen, tender and painful upon touching. Changing shoes and resting are common treatments, but cortisone injections also are recommended, especially if the area is significantly swollen. Hammertoes, ankle sprains and foot fractures are three of the more serious causes of foot pain. Hammertoe is a condition in which the toe buckles and causes the middle joint of the affected toe to poke out, according to Healthsystem.edu. Tight-fitting shoes may make this condition worse. Possible treatments include changing shoes, applying pads or having surgery. Ankle sprains and foot fractures may require a brace, physical therapy or surgery to remedy the break.

    Recommended Treatments for Foot Pain

In order to successfully alleviate foot pain, you should wear more comfortable and well-fitted shoes that do not constrict your feet. Wearing pads and shoe inserts also can significantly help alleviate some of the discomfort, especially for women who may wear high heels or very tight footwear. It is always recommended that you wear your appropriate shoe size rather than attempt to fit into a smaller size; this will cause further foot pain. Massaging your foot after a long day in shoes also provides some relief to your overworked joints. Certain therapeutic lotions will add moisture while you massage your feet. If the foot pain is severe, however, surgery is often the only means of alleviating it. Such considerations always should be discussed with your doctor. For ankle sprains and foot fractures, applying ice to the area, elevating the foot, wearing a cast and undergoing physical therapy are helpful means of getting your ankle or foot back to a normal and working function.
