<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Approved for Some Anxiety Disorders
Citalopram is a drug used for treatment of major depression, but the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) has also approved it for use in some types of anxiety disorders. A doctor may prescribe citalopram for anxiety after reviewing a patient's individual circumstances and the causes of the anxiety.
On the Other: Not Expressly Approved for All Anxiety
Because its active ingredients work to treat depression, the FDA has not approved citalopram for all types of anxiety. Most doctors will use the drug only for social phobias or some kinds of panic attacks, choosing other drugs to treat general anxiety.
Bottom Line
Talk to your doctor about whether citalopram is a safe choice for anxiety. Individual circumstances and other conditions or medicines may affect the decision to treat anxiety with citalopram.
