Studies have shown that Zicam -- an over the counter cold remedy -- can reduce the duration and severity of symptoms of the common cold. The homeopathic ingredients in Zicam are popular remedies for upper respiratory ailments such as sneezing, stuffiness or runny nose. The makers of Zicam sell an allergy nasal gel that contains the same primary ingredients as Zicam cold medicine.

On the Other: Ingredients Not Proven for Allergies

A 2009 review in the journal Clinical Infectious Disease pointed out that most of the studies proving the effectiveness of Zicam's active ingredient were poor in design and setup; scientists claimed that Zicam's effectiveness was unclear. Zicam's active ingredient reportedly prevents rhinovirus (the common cold) from binding to a specific cell receptor, which is not involved in allergic response. The Food and Drug Administration also has taken action against Zicam after hundreds of consumers complained that three of Zicam's intranasal products -- containing the same active ingredients -- took away their sense of smell.

    Bottom Line

Because of some of its herbal ingredients, Zicam may reduce the duration and severity of certain upper respiratory symptoms related to allergies, but its active ingredient will not help, and it may have more risks than benefits. Talk to your doctor about your allergies and whether Zicam is an appropriate choice for you.
