When doing a breast self exam, it is important to know what possible cancerous lumps may feel like and when it may be necessary to go to the doctor for further examination.
Breast self exam
As a woman, you should perform a breast self exam at least once a month. You must become familiar with the size, shape and feel of your breasts to notice any inconsistency from month to month.
Non-cancerous lumps
According to the California State University Student Health Center, your breasts may change on a monthly basis due to your menstrual cycle, which may cause lumps to appear for a short period of time.
Abnormal breast lumps
An abnormal breast lump that can be moved around and is the consistency of a grape could be a cyst or a fluid filled sac. You may also feel pain or have swelling around the nipple area that could be caused by a infected milk duct.
Possible cancerous lumps
Abnormal breast lumps can be a cause for concern if they are hard, feel like a dry bean and are unmovable. These types of lumps can be cancerous and should be checked out by a doctor.
Other ways to detect lumps
Mammograms can detect a lump in your breast up to two years before you are able to feel it, according to Campus Health. It is recommended that women over 40 have a mammogram once every year.
