<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Baby Walkers Are Not 100 Percent Safe
Even with new safety standards introduced in 1997 to prevent walkers from falling down stairs, it can still happen. The American Academy of Pediatrics urges parents against getting walkers for their children. Walkers also may delay a child's natural desire to learn to walk on her own.
On the Other: Walkers Allow Your Child to Follow You
Walkers can keep children away from certain dangers, while giving them entertainment. They also can strengthen lower leg muscles, but not upper leg and hip muscles. Walkers allow your child to get around the house quickly, especially if your child will use it on hardwood, tile or linoleum flooring.
Bottom Line
Because walkers are not completely safe and because they may delay natural walking, it is better to get a stationary activity center instead. These centers usually have toy bars, and some have sound and lights to entertain your baby, without the safety and developmental concerns walkers pose.
