    How to Use Maxalt

    Use Maxalt to only to treat migraine headaches that have already begun--Maxalt is not intended for preventive use. Only use as prescribed by your doctor. Don't take Maxalt for common or tension headaches. Maxalt tablets should be taken at least two hours apart and you must not take more than 30 mg in a 24 hour period. If you received Maxalt in tablet form, take the tablet with a full glass of water. If you received Maxalt in its orally disintegrating form (Maxalt-MLT), place the tablet on your tongue and allow it to dissolve while swallowing several times. Do not chew the tablets.

    Dosing

    Maxalt is a drug that is used as needed. You do not need to take it on a daily schedule. Since you only take as needed there is no possibility of missing a dose.

    What to Do about Side Effects of Maxalt

    The most common side effects of Maxalt use are tiredness, fatigue, dizziness, dry mouth and sleepiness. Users may also experience the feeling of pain or pressure in the throat or chest. Serious side effects needing emergency care may include allergic reactions like hives, swelling of the face, lips or tongue, and difficulty breathing. Call your doctor if you develop side effects such as chest pain that spreads to your shoulder or arm, severe stomach pain or bloody diarrhea, numbness and/or tingling in the finger or toes.     Maxalt Interactions With Other Drugs

    Maxalt should not be used if you have a history of heart disease or high blood pressure that is not controlled. Talk to your doctor about the safety of Maxalt if you have diabetes or high cholesterol. Obesity and smoking may also cause complications while taking Maxalt. You should not take Maxalt with MAO inhibitors. Don't take Maxalt if you are nursing or pregnant. Be sure your doctor is aware of medicines you currently take, especially those for depression, to avoid harmful drug interactions.
