  • If you are the owner of a restaurant or establishment in Florida and would like to sell beer or wine, you're in luck: Beer and wine licenses are relatively inexpensive in the state of Florida, especially when compared with the fees of other states. Moreover, the process for obtaining such a license is rather straightforward. Applications may be filled out online, at local offices, or even mailed directly to you.

    Determine License Type

A beer and wine license in Florida differs from a liquor license in that you will need no quota license; you will simply need to determine whether you plan to serve beer and wine at your establishment, or if you will allow carryout purchases. The former, known as a "consumption-on-premises license," and the latter, known as a "package license," are not issued by a predetermined quota dictating the number of licenses that may be given to establishments in a specified area. This means these licenses are often easier to obtain than a liquor license. If you are the owner of a restaurant that makes at least 51 percent of its profits on food and nonalcoholic beverages, you may also opt for an SRX license, which will also allow liquor sales.

    Apply for the License

To obtain a license, you will be required to fill out a license application form. These may be obtained at any office of the Florida Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco, or you can request that one be mailed to you. Printable versions of these license forms are also available on the division's website. Once your form is completed, handing it in to the division is just as simple: You may choose to drop it off at the office itself or mail it in. Should questions arise during form completion, you may even request a meeting with a member of the licensing staff.

    Obtaining the License

While you wait for your forms to be approved, you may choose to request a temporary license for $100 or a quarter of the application fee, whichever is greater. This will allow you to serve alcohol before your license is formally recognized. Once approved, you may sell beer and wine using your new license. This license may be moved from county to county if your business is relocated. Private organizations that do not plan to obtain full licenses may also be granted a temporary license for up to three days for an event.
