<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Walk-Under Fixtures
Hanging light fixtures that people walk under should be no less than 7 feet high, from the bottom of the fixture to the surface of the floor. If the fixture is hanging from the second floor and lighting the ground floor, it shouldn't hang below the surface of the second floor.
On the Other: Over-Table Fixtures
If you're hanging a light fixture over a dining or parlor room table, the fixtures should be installed 30 to 42 inches from the table top, depending on your preference. The lower you hang a lamp, the larger it will appear. Consider this when choosing your fixtures to ensure that the fixture's scale matches that of the room.
Bottom Line
Seven feet is the minimum standard for hanging light fixtures people will walk beneath. Fixtures hung over tables should be between 30 and 42 inches from the bottom of the light to the surface of the table. Remember to think about the size of the light fixture in relation to the location in and the size of the room in which it will hang.
