  • There are two major types of depression after pregnancy. The first is a temporary and mild condition that causes mood swings, trouble sleeping and other symptoms. The other is postpartum depression, a long-lasting condition that can cause a mother to harm herself or her child. Knowing the symptoms of each can help new mothers decide whether what they're feeling is cause for concern.

    Baby Blues

Know the symptoms of "baby blues." This is a common and temporary condition that lasts a week or so after delivery. According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms include mood swings, anxiety, sadness, irritability, lack of focus and trouble sleeping.

    Postpartum Depression

Know the symptoms of postpartum depression. This is a longer-lasting and more serious condition with more intense symptoms. These include loss of appetite, inability to sleep, intense anger, extreme fatigue, loss of sex drive and ahedonia (inability to feel joy or pleasure). Further symptoms include major mood swings, trouble bonding with the baby, social withdrawal and thoughts of harming yourself or the child.

    Risk Factors

Know who's at risk. Certain women are more inclined to develop postpartum depression. Risk factors include a history of depression, a history of postpartum depression, major stress within the past year (including pregnancy complications), marital trouble, lack of social support and having a pregnancy that is unplanned or unwanted. Women with bipolar disorder have a higher risk of developing postpartum psychosis.

    See a Doctor

Tell your doctor if you are worried or showing any signs of postpartum depression. Don't be embarrassed; postpartum depression is well known, it is serious and your doctor will be glad you brought it up and decided to seek treatment. Early detection can make for a faster recovery.
