Propecia has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. It is the first drug available to combat male pattern baldness that comes in pill form. Only 2% of patients trying Propecia experienced side effects. These included diminished sex drive, erectile difficulties and a decreased amount of semen. Merck, a pharmaceutical company, conducted clinical trials on Propecia. The study showed that Propecia was usually, but not always, effective for hair growth. Patients with male pattern baldness kept their hair or grew more after one year of treatment 83% of the time. This study was done on men with mild to moderate hair loss. Propecia does not work for all patients, but the success rate is high (83%) and the side effect risk low (2%). The side effects are temporary, lasting only as long as the drug is used. Propecia is likely worth trying, with doctor supervision, if a patient is concerned about male pattern baldness. On One Hand: Approval and Side Effects
