Dogs in chronic pain can benefit from taking aspirin, according to the School for Champions. Aspirin can help dogs that have arthritis, joint pain, swelling, pain or fever. Weight determines the dosage you can give. The rule of thumb is usually 5 mg to 10 mg per pound of the dog every 12 hours. For example, a 32-pound dog would take between 160 to 320 mg of aspirin. (Regular aspirin is 320 mg and baby aspirin is 80 mg.) Start on the smaller dosage first, 160 mg, which is half a regular aspirin or two baby aspirin.

On the Other: Aspirin Can Be Toxic to Dogs

Some dogs cannot tolerate aspirin and they may get an upset stomach or an ulcer. A bleeding ulcer could be fatal for your dog. If you give too high a dosage of aspirin, this also could be toxic. Small breeds that are 5 pounds or less are particularly vulnerable to receiving an overdose.

    Bottom Line

If you check with your vet first, give your dog the correct dosage of aspirin and give the aspirin with food; you may help your dog if he is in chronic pain or has inflammation. You should never substitute non-aspirin pain relievers such as Tylenol because those could kill your dog. Also, do not give your dog aspirin just because he is acting a little funny. Only give aspirin for serious conditions.
