Police academies provide a comprehensive training approach, offering classroom and hands-on training. You must meet minimum age requirements, pass a basic literacy test, have a clean criminal background and be in good physical condition to be considered for the academy.
Accreditation
Police academies must meet the requirements set forth by the Peace Officer Standards & Training board in order to be accredited.
Format
Police academies are a full-time commitment; they require at least 40 hours a week of training. It can be hard, but not impossible, to juggle a job and family while attending an academy.
Classroom Training
In the academy, you attend classroom training that prepares you for a career as a police officer. Subjects include sociology, legal issues and CPR.
Behind the Wheel
Because the job requires much time behind the wheel of a car, you undergo a defensive-driving course. The class teaches you how to drive under strenuous conditions.
Defensive Tactics
You learn the use of force continuum, which includes presence and verbal commands and using devices such as pepper spray, batons and tasers.
Firearms Training
You learn how and when to use a firearm. You must pass a firearms qualification test in order to be certified to carry a gun.
