Skills
MRI technicians are trained in the use of magnetic resonance imaging equipment, which typically encloses the patient in a machine. The technician must calm the patient, who might feel claustrophobic. Therefore, the ability to communicate well is an important job skill.
Responsibilities
MRI technicians' responsibilities include operating the equipment and positioning the patient correctly to ensure that the image is captured per the physician's requests. The technician may be required to use physical strength to position the patient.
Degree required
MRI technicians are required at a minimum to have an associate's degree in radiology. Course work includes classes in radiology, medical terminology, oral communications and patient care.
License
MRI technicians are required to be licensed in most states. A license can be obtained by taking an exam with the American Registry of Radiologic Technicians.
