Workgroups are a Windows networking technique that makes it easy to set up and beneficial for home users. A Windows workgroup can be set up between two or more computers as a way to share files and Internet connectivity.
Function
A workgroup allows home users to share computers across a home network. Users on one machine can open, edit, and backup files on another computer in the home.
Considerations
Windows workgroups do not have good security. There are no password requirements or access restrictions, so workgroup technologies should only be implemented in a trusted place like a home or very small office.
Identification
As long as the computers on the network are configured for the same workgroup name, they can all identify each other. Double-click on "Network" (named "Network Neighborhood" in older Windows versions) and view the list of computers in the workgroup.
Internet
In older Windows operating systems, workgroup technologies were used to share a connection for the Internet. As routers become more common in the home, computers are able to connect to the router instead of using one main machine.
Features
Users can share files and folders. In addition to sharing information, workgroup technologies also allow users to share printers. Users can have one printer shared by everyone, instead of one printer for each workstation.
