  • There is a five-step process to determining disability through the Social Security Administration (SSA). Disability is determined by your condition's impact on your daily life and ability to work. You must also meet certain work history requirements to qualify for benefits.

    Current Income

Your income must be within the guidelines set forth every year by the SSA, or you must be currently unemployed.

    Impact on Daily Life

Your ability to perform basic activities must be significantly impacted and not expected to improve for at least one year. Basic functions which must be impacted include physical abilities and memory.

    Predetermined Impairments

The SSA maintains a list of predefined medical impairments which will automatically qualify for disability. If your medical condition does not appear on this list, you may still qualify.

    Continuing Your Job

Your medical condition must prevent you from being able to continue working in the field you were working in before the diagnosis.

    Availability of Other Work

The agency will review your ability to obtain work in a different field of employment. This ability is based on your condition, your education, and any skills or experience you may have in fields that may be available to you.
