A media storage device is a device that holds computer data. The storage devices come in two forms--primary storage devices and secondary storage devices. Primary storage devices hold data for short periods of time. Secondary storage devices hold data for longer periods of time.
Primary Storage Devices
Primary storage devices are also known as volatile storage and are easily erasable. This type of storage includes the computer's memory (RAM).
Secondary Storage Devices
Secondary storage devices store data permanently or until they are intentionally erased. These devices include hard drives and CD-ROMs.
Magnetic Storage Devices
Magnetic storage devices include hard drives and tape drives. They are secondary storage devices where data is written to the device by a magnet.
Optical Storage Devices
Optical storage devices include CD- and DVD-ROM. They are secondary storage devices where the data is written to the device by a laser.
Flash Storage Devices
Flash storage devices include USB flash drives and MP3 players. They are secondary storage devices that are actually a form of memory called EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory).
