    Definition

    According to the Texas Penal Code, "Coercion means a threat, however communicated" to take one of a variety of actions.

    Commit an Offense

    First, a person may coerce by threatening to commit an offense.

    Inflict Injury

    A person may also coerce another by threatening to inflict bodily injury, either on the threatened person or on another.

    Accusation of an Offense

    A person can act in a coercive manner by threatening to accuse a person of an offense.

    Reputation

    Coercion also occurs when a person is threatened with exposure to "hatred, contempt or ridicule," or otherwise threatens to harm the "credit or business repute of any person."

    Refusal of Public Services

    A public servant is being coercive, according to the Texas Penal Code, when they threaten to take or withhold action in that role.
