  • If you've purchased a laptop in the past five years, you have wireless Internet capability. All that is needed to connect to the Internet is a wireless hot spot. If you attempt to connect to a secure connection, you'll also need a password.

    Searching for Hot Spots

The method used to search for hot spots differs depending on the operating system. The quickest way to find a wireless hot spot, regardless of the operating system, is to click on the the network connections icon in the taskbar.

    Selecting a Network Connection

Once you locate the list of wireless network connections, you'll have to choose one. If you're trying to connect in a public location such as a hotel or coffee shop, look for a network name that is similar to your location. Peet's coffee shop might have a network name of Peet's Wireless.

    Signal Strength

Sometimes none of the network names that appear in the network connections list are recognizable. In this case, choose the connection with the strongest signal strength.

    No Networks

If you get a message stating that no network connections can be found, there are two possibilities. One, you may be in an area where there are no hot spots. Another possibility might be that your wireless is turned off. Laptop manufacturers provide an option to turn off wireless in order to conserve battery power.

    Cost

Free wireless hot spots are ubiquitous. There are times, however, when your only option is to pay for a wireless connection. As of 2009, expect to pay between $7.95 and $14.95 for a few hours of connection time and $20 or more for extended connection time.
