According to the Alabama Coalition Against Domestic Violence, dating violence occurs when one partners seeks to gain and retain power and control over the other. Dating violence knows no limits when it comes to ethnicity, economic status, or social standing.
Types of Abuse
Dating abuse can be physical, verbal, emotional, psychological, or sexual.
Know Your Rights
The Dating Bill of Rights summarizes your rights in a relationship. Among them, you have the right to ask someone for a date and the right to refuse a date. You have the right to refuse advances from your dating partner. "No" means "No."
Health Concerns
Dating violence has been linked to health problems such as increased use of alcohol, tobacco, and drugs. It also has a negative effect on body image and self-esteem.
Drugs
Date rape drugs can be used to lower a person's inhibitions, making it hard to refuse or stop the violence. Drugs can be unknowingly slipped into a drink at a party or club. It's best to never leave your drink unattended and don't accept drinks from other people.
Help is a Phone Call Away
If you are the victim of dating violence, you can also get help and support by calling The National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) or The National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1-800-656-4673.
