  • The Wonderlic Personnel Test, often called simply the Wonderlic, is an intelligence test administered to prospective employees for recruitment and developmental purposes. The test is designed to measure general cognitive ability, with a particular emphasis on problem solving and learning aptitude.

    Features

The Wonderlic test contains 50 questions, including word comparisons, number comparisons, sentence parallelism, geometric shape analysis and story problems involving mathematical or logical solutions. No calculators or other problem-solving tools may be used during the test.

    Time Frame

The Wonderlic test has a 12-minute time limit. This helps evaluate a prospective employee's performance under pressure.

    Function

Wonderlic test scores range from zero to 50, with 50 being the highest possible score. One point is awarded for each correct answer. A Wonderlic score of 20 indicates average intelligence.

    History

Eldon F. Wonderlic, a pioneer in Industrial Psychology, created the Wonderlic Personnel Test in 1937.

    Fun Fact

The Wonderlic test has gained notoriety for its use in testing college football players entering the NFL draft. Surprisingly, offensive tackles average a 26 Wonderlic score, the highest among all positions and two points higher than quarterbacks. Halfbacks post the lowest scores, averaging a 16 Wonderlic.

    Significance

In football terms, most NFL teams would prefer quarterbacks with Wonderlic scores over 30, although Vince Young reportedly scored a 6, and even the great Dan Marino could only muster a 16.
