  • Transmission mounts are engineered to do far more for an automobile than simply keep the drive-train from falling out. Torque transmission and vibration isolation are two of a tranny mount's important duties.

    Material

Transmission mounts are usually made of rubber, but can also be made of high-density polyurethane.

    Rear-Drive Load Bearing

The transmission mount in a rear-wheel drive car is used primarily to keep the back of its transmission from dragging on the ground.

    Front-Drive Load Bearing

The transmission mount on front-wheel-drive cars bear a significant amount of load, since they carry not only the transmission but the engine.

    Torque Absorption

On a front-wheel-drive car, the transmission mount also helps to keep the engine from moving under acceleration or hard braking.

    Isolation

The transmission mounts are also designed to absorb the minor drive-line vibrations that come from transmission operation. Additionally, the rubber serves double-duty to protect the transmission from vibration transmitted by the chassis.
