A printer is a type of computer hardware that is sometimes known as a peripheral. This means that printers work along with computers to perform tasks, but do not run any programs on their own.
Function
The purpose of a printer is to make a copy of a file or document on a computer. Printers typically transfer copies to paper, but in some cases may utilize film or thicker paper like cardstock.
Types
Impact printers use tiny pins or something similar to press against the surface of the paper or other material to create an image. Non-impact printers use lasers or liquid or wax-based inks to color the surface of the paper.
Features
Non-impact printers give users the option of printing in black or white or in color. Printers also feature different print qualities, such as drafts or final copies, and can print documents vertically or horizontally.
Use
When you instruct your computer to print a file, your printer communicates with your printer either through a cable known as a USB connection or wirelessly through an Internet connection. Typically, paper or other material is fed from a tray, passed through the printing mechanism where it is struck or colored, then fed onto a second tray when completed.
Considerations
Some printers are known as multi-purpose printers and allow users to scan documents, make copies or send faxes. These types of printers are generally more expensive than traditional printers.
