  • The Book of Revelation, also called the Apocalypse or the Revelation to John, is the last book of the Bible. It contains numerous symbols and is concerned with the apocalypse, or the end of the world. One of the major symbols in Revelation is that of the "lamb."

    History

The Book of Revelation was written when the early Christian church was being persecuted by Rome. Though the exact date it was written is uncertain, it may have been during the time of the emperor Domitian.

    Description

One of the descriptions of the lamb is that it has seven horns and seven eyes. Taken literally, this is difficult to understand or picture, but the number seven is a common symbol for perfection or totality.

    Jewish Tradition

Lambs were sacrificed in the Temple as a part of the Passover celebration in the Jewish tradition. The lamb in Revelation has the meaning of being or having been a sacrifice.

    Leadership

The lamb is called "King of Kings and Lord of Lords" in Revelation 17:14. The lamb is not simply a sacrifice, but is invincible and powerful.

    Lamb of God

Put together with the stories of the Last Supper and the Crucifixion, taking into account that Revelation was written by either John the Apostle or a disciple of John during a period of intense persecution, it seems clear that the lamb in Revelation is meant to mean Jesus Christ.
