Most every species has a mating ritual of some type. Flirting is part of that ritual for humans. It is the first step in finding a mutual attraction. Other men use flirting as an ego booster to see if they still have what it takes to play the game. But what do men really want and don't say when they're flirting?
Attention
Men want attention. Instead of coming right out and saying, "hey look at me," flirting allows them a podium to get your attention.
Testing the Waters
Testing the waters is another reason men flirt instead of coming straight out and asking if you are interested. Your responses to his antics will let him know if he has a chance at dating you.
Sexual Attraction
Human beings are sexual creatures, and during the flirting phase men are looking for the possibility of sexual attraction without coming right out and asking if you would like to go to bed with them.
Self-Esteem Building
For some men, flirting is just a self-esteem builder. They are in a relationship where the honeymoon has worn off and are just using this ritual to see if they still have what it takes.
Ego Booster
Flirting can be a vessel used by some men to show off for their friends. This happens more in the teenage years. It is an ego booster for them when they can flirt and get a woman's interest and then walk away, putting another notch in their belt in their friends' eyes.
