<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Proven benefits
Dextromethorphan is the main ingredient in over-the-counter cough remedies, such as syrups or gel tablets. The drug suppresses the brain's control of coughing. Cough preparations frequently combine dextromethorphan with other drugs, such as decongestants or pain relievers, to relieve symptoms of colds or the flu.
On the Other: Side effects and abuse
Dextromethorphan can cause life-threatening conditions if combined with certain types of antidepressants or alcohol. Taking too much dextromethorphan can cause anxiety, nervousness, shallow breathing, dizziness or rash. Dextromethorphan is on the Drug Enforcement Administration's drug watch list because of deaths related to abuse and the drug's distribution in powdered form over the internet.
Bottom Line
The standard adult dose is 15 or 30 mg taken three or four times daily, depending on preparation (syrup, gel capsules, tablets or dissolving oral strips). Follow package instructions or ask your doctor or a pharmacist for specific doses based on preparation.
