Emeralds are the birthstone for those born in May. You can wear emeralds in a number of ways, including necklaces, rings and bracelets. Emeralds can cost anywhere from $30 to thousands of dollars.
Significance
Emeralds are one of the most precious gemstones in the world. In some cases, emeralds are worth more than diamonds of the same size. Many valuable emeralds are kept by collectors, in museums or passed down as family heirlooms.
Color
The most valuable emeralds are those that display a glowing "emerald green" color. In other cases, a valuable emerald can have a small hint of blue.
Size
The larger the carat size, the more value an emerald has. Smaller emeralds are easier to buy and cost much less than large emeralds.
Cut
The cut plays a significant factor in determining value. An emerald should be cut by skilled professionals who understand the significance of fracture points and cleavage.
Clarity
Emeralds of a lower value are darker in color and appear dull and opaque. Emeralds with many inclusions decrease in value. Some cloudiness is natural, but the emerald shouldn't appear cloudy to the point that it loses its transparency.
