    A founder is someone who founds or establishes something, in this case a religon. Therefore, that being has to be where the religion originated. And Islam did not originate with the Holy Prohet Muhammad (PBUH) when there were prophets before him that carried the same message of Islam that he did. Allah is the One who sent these messengers to this world, and He was the One who informed them of the religion. The Prohets of Allah all preached Islam, and did what was told by Allah. He is the source of all knowledge relating to Islam and the One who has set the guidelines to it. Therefore Allah is the founder of Islam.

    The Prophet Muhammed (pbuh) is generally seen as collecting the beliefs and rules which codify Islam.

    Muhammed (pbuh) was born in Makkah, a city in the present-day Saudi Arabia in 570 C.E. He is a direct descendant of Prophet Ishmael, the first son of Prophet Abraham. Peace and blessings of God be on all His prophets. Muhammad received divine revelations (The Holy Quran) over a period of 23 years in the seventh century of the Christian Era. Muslims believe that he is the last Messenger sent by God for the guidance of mankind until the Day of Judgment. He is the model for humanity of all walks of life to follow until the Last Hour. God sent him as a mercy for the worlds.

    The primary sources of knowledge are the Holy Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad. Anyone wanting to live a life in worship and obedience to God should follow these teachings.

    The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is NOT the founder of Islam. Islam is not a religion, it is the natural way of life. That is, Islam was the religion of Adam and Abraham and all the other prophets of Allah. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) only established and revealed the final revelations Allah sent to the world.

    Note that Islam is not named after its founder or a person like Judaism (Judah) and Christianity (Jesus Christ) is.

    The word Islam literally means ‘peace’ or ‘submission’. In the context of religion it means ‘submission to God’ and in this sense it was founded by God, for it is He who wants mankind to submit to His will. That’s the central message He has sent to mankind through all of His appointed messengers and prophets starting from Adam, through Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus to Mohammed to name but a very few.

    According to the Holy Qur’an (HQ) all groups of people that ever lived on this earth have had God’s central message of submission to His will (ie Islam) delivered to them.

    The prophet Muhammed is commonly acknowledged as the founder of Islam. Some Muslims, though, believe that Islam was actually founded by Abraham and that Muhammed's purpose was solely to deliver the Quran.

    Definition of founder:

    A person who founds or establishes some institution

    In actual fact, the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) did not establish islam. He passed on the message given to Prophet Adam by God. Islam was refined and spread to the world via Prophet Muhammad, who was the last Prophet of Islam.

    So. technically speaking, being last in line doesnt make you the founder.

    Many varied answers are saying the similar things in different ways so also is the case with my answer but I hope that an unaware reader will not be confused.

    The Historical viewpoint is that Islam was started by the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him=pbuh in Arabia many centuries ago. This is very important in the west because there are many sects and social or fraternal organizations that may incorporate Islamic teachings but these groups all developed in the 20th century or slightly earlier and have no historical connection to the prophet Muhammad of Arabia.(PBUH)

    The Holy book of Islam is the Quran.
    The important thing is that in the Quran it states that Abraham is the one who constructed the Holy City of Mecca sacred house and he is the one who named his sons and his followers as Muslims. The Quran commands muslims to follow the way(religion and life style) of Abraham. PBUH

    The Prophet Muhammad phuh said that all Prophets are brothers and that no one is closer to Jesus PBUH son of Mary (The Virgin) other than he (Muhammad).

    The Prophet Muhammad PBUH said that the natural state of Mankind at birth is a pure state that is the same state of Heart and spirit for which the Muslim strives to attain in his life but society and primarily our parents will slowly but surely take us away from that state of purity.

    The Quran states very explicitly that Both Moses and Jesus PBUT knew about the Prophet Muhammad and indeed alerted there followers of his coming as a form of good news for them and Jesus being the lucky of the two would have the opportunity to be again in life and to witness the followers of Muhammad PBUH (Muslims).

    Muslims believe that 124 thousand Prophets were sent but 5 five of them were singled out as being especially powerful in the Quran.

    The point is that Islam from the Point of view of the Quran was begun long before Muhammad saws but the completion of the religion of Islam and the last period of time were sigified by the Coming of the Prophet Muhammad. His mission being not only to complete the revelation but to clarify the misconceptions and distortions of the earlier traditions.

    So for the reader if you choose the Historical prespective then you know that the Prophet Muhammad of Arabia was the founder of Islam and if you believe that there is only One God and that all the children of Abrahm would be blessed alike as promissed in the Bible then you would see Islam as the inheritor of the Divine Teachings of all the Biblical Prophets and Muhammad saws as the completion of Islam and last prophet.

    It is noteworthy that Muhammad never asked anyone to Pray to him, and he never asked anyone to give him their wealth but he instructed them that salvation is in sincerity.
    He stated that if Jesus Pbuh the son of the Virgin Mary were alive during the life of Muhammad (or after) he would have no choice but to say the statement called Shahadah which is what we consider the statement of creed in formal conversion to Islam.
    There is no GOD other than Allah and Muhammad is his slave and messenger pbuh.

    By the way for those who want to suggest that Islamic traditions in Arabia were borrowed from Jewish or Christian, Hindu or Greek or other cultural/religious traditions then they must be able to prove this by the Quran itself and the life example of the Prophet Muhammad PBUH.

    There were many charges that the Quran was stolen from the bible but if you get an Arabic Bible and Arabic Quran or do it in English for that matter you cannot draw a sufficient comparrison other than the fact that some names are similar for Prophets. Pbut

    Islam is a selestial religion that teaches Muslims to worship Allah as one and to submit to him.

    this was based on a prophecy by the prophet mohammed

    the basic origins of the religion are very similar to christianity in many ways

    it is the more modern translations of the qu'ran which have created many splinters of different versions of islam
