  • Heating a home can be a real issue when the electricity goes out. In some areas of the country even a few hours without heat poses a threat not only to the inhabitants of the house, but to the plumbing as well. Families without backup power systems may find that they can get by with a small generator connected directly to the furnace in emergencies, but would be well advised to hire an electrician to do all the necessary wiring and transfer switch installation.

    Gas Furnace Electrical Draw

A gas furnace requires electricity to power the hot air blower, exhaust fan, gas control valve and, in some cases, ignite the flame. The electrical requirement of a gas furnace is therefore low, generally less than 800 watts. Gas furnaces which do not have blower fans or exhaust fans use much less power. A small generator with a 1,000 watt rating will be able to power a gas furnace and a few lights.
