  • When you shop for televisions, you will encounter a lot of new terminology referring to definitions and digital content. "Enhanced definition" is one such technology.

    Television Basics

A standard TV has a resolution of 480 vertical scan lines and 528 horizontal scan lines. These lines determine the size of the screen's image; the standard is called "480i."

    Interlacing

A standard TV signal in North America carries 30 frames per second. The frames are "interlaced" so only half of the image is refreshed every second.

    Progressive Scan

Progressive scan refreshes the screen with a new frame every second. A standard-sized progressive display is referred to as "480p" instead of "480i."

    Minimum Requirement

"480p60" means the progressive-scan image is displayed at 60 frames per second. This is the minimum requirement for an "enhanced definition" TV (EDTV).

    EDTV Technology

You probably will not find a flat-panel EDTV. Instead, they are almost all cathode ray tubed, is a device that sends electrons through a tube-like device inside the television to a screen filled with phosphors. Phosphors light up when electrons hit them, which is how a CRT screen displays an image. A CRT takes up much more space than can fit into a flat-panel TV. However, many EDTVs come with the "16:9" screen ratio that approximates the shape of a movie-theater screen.
