Another medical treatment option for gallstones is to surgically remove the gallbladder in a procedure known as cholecystectomy. A doctor may also use mechanical shock waves in a procedure known as lithotripsy in order to break the stones up. When non-surgical treatments are used, the problem may occur again in the future.

    Lifestyle Changes

    One of the largest lifestyle changes that can contribute to eliminating the risk of gallstones is to turn toward healthy nutrition. Many people suffering from gallstones are overweight as a result of consuming too many calories or too high a level of cholesterol. Even people who are only slightly overweight are putting themselves at risk for developing gallstones. Losing weight slowly and healthily is the best way to ward off the formation of gallstones. Recreational exercise can also significantly reduce the risk of developing gallstones, especially in women.

    Herbal Remedies

    Milk thistle in extract form can be taken as a tablet or capsule to aid in breaking up or preventing gallstones. After being taken for several months, essential oils and milk thistle were successful in dissolving some gallstones. Peppermint oil, for example, can be used to dissolve gallstones, but only upon recommendation from a physician.
