There are many electrical currents flowing throughout your car, and many of them must be regulated so they electrical parts will not malfunction. The parts that regulate the current are called relay switches.
Purpose of Relays
Most relays have at least two circuits--one controls the current, turning it on and off, and another circuit controls the amount of power needed to energize the parts.
Location of Relays
Most relays are under the hood and grouped together behind the kick panels. Others are in the fuse box under the dashboard.
Parts with Relays
Most parts built with copper need relay switches. For example, starters, solenoids, fuel pumps and ignition-key switches must have the flow of current regulated.
Test your Relays
You can test the operation of the relay switches with a test light, voltmeter or ohmmeter.
Where to Buy
Purchase relay switches at auto-parts store, salvage yards or online. You will need information about your car and your old relay.
